I know how all of you love the music and artists that are featured in a variety of episodes of CSI, so I wanted to give you this heads-up about an artist that will be making his debut on the October 17th episode of CSI:NY.

Will Dailey’s Back Flipping Forward will be the first release from the newly launched CBS Records, a label that combines traditional music marketing with direct integration of its artists’ music into television programming on the CBS and CW networks. The October 2 release of Dailey’s Back Flipping Forward will benefit from this undeniably powerful medium–and one that is playing an increasingly important role in breaking artists–when he performs his first single “Rise” on-camera in a special episode of CSI: NY on October 17. As an added bonus, a commercial immediately following this episode will “back announce” Dailey’s performance and inform the audience that the song and album are available for purchase.

The songs on Back Flipping Forward, Dailey’s CBS Records debut, were written over a three-year span, inspired by the people he encountered and the places he stumbled upon while playing countless shows on a series of rambling cross-country tours. Tracks–such as the lovely melodic opener “Boom Boom,” the infectious pop-rocker “Bi Polar Baby,” the anthemic “Rise” (the album’s first single) and the gorgeous Appalachian folk closer, “Dear Grace,” a number usually done a cappella during Dailey’s live shows, reflect his eclectic influences, from Tom Waits to early Rod Stewart.

Here’s the press release I received:

“CSI NY” TAPS A FINE FRENZY
AKA ALISON SUDOL FOR A ROLE AND PERFORMANCE
IN SEPTEMBER 26th SEASON PREMIERE

A Fine Frenzy Currently On VH1 “You Oughta Know” Tour 2007

Alison Sudol, aka A Fine Frenzy, will make her acting debut on the season opener for “CSI: NY,” which airs Wednesday, September 26th, on CBS. Sudol will also perform two songs: “Almost Lover,” the lead single from One Cell in the Sea, A Fine Frenzy’s debut, and “Last of Days,” another track from the album.

“Almost Lover” is already in the Top 30 at Mainstream AC radio and has been added by AC stations such as WLTW-New York, the most listened to station in the country, and KOST-Los Angeles where it is getting Top 10 airplay at both. The accompanying video, directed by acclaimed indie filmmakers the Brothers Nee, is in large rotation at VH1 and the band is currently on the road with Brandi Carlile for VH1’s “You Oughta Know” Tour 2007. A Fine Frenzy will appear on VH1’s “Top 20 Countdown” on September 29th just prior to the tour’s two nights at New York City’s Fillmore/Irving Plaza (10/3 & 10/4).

Sudol will be featured in Vogue’s December issue and A Fine Frenzy has recorded a searing version of “Fever” (the Peggy Lee classic) for the Dan In Real Life soundtrack, due out October 2nd. She is one of Nokia’s featured artists for September/October and is included in Music Choice’s “Fresh Crops” program for September. [insert AOL “About to Pop” information]

A Fine Frenzy’s One Cell in the Sea debuted at #3 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart earlier this year. The album has scanned over 50,000 units thus far and sales have been increasing each week. The band, which was the first in 2007 to cross over from the new artist chart to Billboard’s Top 100, has performed on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Last Call with Carson Daly.”

“The melodies on this debut are breathless…imbued with piano swells,” said Entertainment Weekly. “Such attention to the dramatic works wonders on stripped-down tunes like ‘Almost Lover,’ which lets Sudol’s delicate voice take center stage.” The album earned a four-star review from Paste, which found it “bursting with talent” while Harp observed: “A Fine Frenzy is a blend of sounds and influences…..where there’s Ella, Aretha and Louis, there’s also Radiohead, Sigor Ros, Aqualung and Keane.”

Upcoming tour dates are as follows:

Many times we hear from fans wondering what song played in a certain episode of the shows. I too have heard a song and wondered what it was to go find out more information about it.

Trish has got an entire category on her blog dedicated to the music heard in CSI, Without a Trace and Cold case.

WARNING! The rest of her site has lots of topics about sex and erotica, so if you don’t want to see or read anything about those topics, I’d highly encourage you to stay within the topic category linked above.

She’s got a great resource though on the site. I first stumbled across her blog from another post she did on Blog Critics Magazine about songs from the shows. The comments to that post are loaded with great information as well.

Here’s to some happy listening!

I must not be watching enough big network TV during the off-season. I can’t remember seeing a CSI:Miami preview yet and if I did I didn’t notice the music. Has anyone else heard it? I need to pay more attention.

Moglen is not done, however. He hopes to add an additional 259 faces to the wall, commemorating the lost first responders of all five boroughs. A third Jewish fireman from Manhattan, Stephen Belson, will be among the additions.

Moglen estimates the new expansions will cost $250,000. Actor Gary Sinise – who has donated $50,000 for the cause – and his band will be performing a concert at Brooklyn College on August 11 to raise funds for the project. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and KeySpan Park’s sales office.

The live telecast only drew in less than three million viewers. CSI: episodes trounced it in the ratings.
Talk about a dead event! They may need to call in some CSI:’s to see if they’ve got an event suicide on their hands.

Sinise has been supporting the troops for several years. He began doing tours overseas in 2003 and has been to both Iraq and Afghanistan. After visiting the troops several times, he told the folks at the USO that "I play music with some guys. Why don’t you let me take a band?" Since then, he has been entertaining U.S. troops around with world with the Lt. Dan Band, named after his famous character from Forrest Gump.

I’ve always enjoyed Gary Sinise as an actor and these types of efforts by him for the greater good only make him that much more a good target for my admiration and respect. Not from today’s Memorial Day concert, but the video clip below shows Gary talking about his efforts supporting the troops.

Last evening, I was fortunate enough to talk to a great musical star, PJ Olsson, whose music was featured in both CSI: Miami and CSI: NY this week. His song Hold My Light was on each of the shows and was the perfect musical accompaniment to the scenes it was featured in.
PJ is no newcomer to music, having been around in the industry for over a decade and has recorded three previous albums. Now he’s got five new songs in a new all-digital EP called The Ironwood Sessions he’s released through CBS Records.

I also found out that PJ is the lead singer for the Alan Parsons Project, a band with a very strong and dedicated fan base…much like the CSI shows!

I wanted to find out more about the role that music is playing in the television industry these days and vice-versa. Here are some of the topics we covered in our conversation:

CSIFanatic: PJ, how would you characterize your music style? When I listen to it, it has characteristic of several types of music and I’m curious how you would describe it.

PJ: I have been asked this question so many times. It’s still the same thing I said even 20 years ago when I was putting out music and people were asking me, “Hey, what do you call this?” I really think that I just do pop music. I don’t do rock, I don’t do alternative, I don’t do electronic, I don’t do hip-hop. I steal little pieces of all of them but I believe in the singer-songwriter dream, I guess.

I believe in that and I grew up in a Northern crazy pine-tree filled town and I was the kid that was listening to hip-hop. And though I grew up with the Eagles and Cat Stephens and all of that, I still was break-dancing.

CSIFanatic: So when did you decide to sign with CBS?

PJ: I guess it would have been fall of last year. We started talking then and one of the things I really love is how fast things happen these days. In the fall we started talking about his deal and in February I started handing in product.

CSIFanatic: So there seems to be a very short turn-around time in the way that you’re working with them right now, is that correct?

PJ: Yeah, I’ve been through Indie deals and major deals, but it’s just so cool to be able to give your music to them and in 2 weeks it’s out.

CSIFanatic: So that leads me to the obvious question, what exactly is an EP?

PJ: For me, an EP what we put out when we have some really good music ready and the record’s not done yet.

CSIFanatic: So it’s strictly in digital format?

PJ: Yes, it’s only available in electronic format right now.

In the past, an EP is when they have a record coming out but it’s not ready and they have some great songs and they release them as an EP to build up good feeling about the record before it’s out.

Now, the way we’re looking at it, through digital distribution, there’s way to release music quicker. Instead of releasing a record a year, it might be better to release 3, 5 or 7 song batches throughout the year. That way they are out immediately when the artist is doing them.

So this 5 song burst that CBS and I just did was us getting started together putting out some songs. And at this point, there is talk about an actual physical CD coming out in the fall.

CSIFanatic: Can you tell me about the role that music is playing in TV these days?

PJ: TV is a very insightful medium and it could be more broad than it’s ever been as far as demographics. There are so many types of shows on, from the Desperate Housewives to the Wiggles. So the competition is fierce and the amount of money spent on television and now even music has become an important part of how they add to it.

There are so many shows I see that are so cool that in a certain scene, I want to know about the song. I don’t remember doing that as much, even 10 years ago. In general, everything is just much more multimedia.

And you’ll be happy to know that I even watch CSI.

CSIFanatic: Good for you! What’s your favorite of the shows?

PJ: I would have to say CSI: NY is the one we watch the most, and we also watch CSI: Miami. We watch that for Horatio because we find him to be so smooth. He’s always got a classic line to say. My wife and I love that guy!

CSIFanatic: Has your music been featured in any other shows besides the two CSIs yet?

PJ: Yeah, it’s been featured in the Ghost Whisperer. It was at the peak moment in the show and there was about 4 minutes of the song, She Says to Fly. It’s only Memories was in NCIS. They also used one of the songs on The Unit.

CSIFanatic: Has your music been in any movies?

PJ: Not yet, but CBS will probably do that too.

CSIFanatic: What else can we expect to see from you in the near future? Do you have any other music in the works?

PJ: I’m working on another batch of songs right now that we’re going to put out as a CD in the fall. And I’m always out there playing live, whether I’m playing for myself or I’m singing for Alan Parsons.

CSIFanatic: Are there some upcoming gigs you want me to mention?

PJ: My next date with Alan Parsons will be June 14th in Clearwater, Florida at the Ruth Eckert Hall. And June 15th in Fort Meyers, Florida. People can check the full list of dates for Alan Parsons at alanparsons.com.

I don’t have any of my own dates right now because I’m primarily in the studio for the next two months. In the fall, when the CD comes out there will be a ton of new dates. We hope to go to all the cites with it.

CSIFanatic: Any chance you’ll come to St. Louis, where I am? I’d like to see you in person here.

PJ: Well, you can send an email to my manager and tell him that. His name is Will Sharp and his email address is wil@ses-la.com. (All of you out there that are interested in PJ coming to your town, be sure to do the same…write to his manager.)

For anyone wanting to hear learn more about PJ, his music or his play dates can visit his MySpace site or his regular web site.

He’s a very warm and friendly guy and was a complete joy to talk to. I hope he continues to do very well in his career.
