Episode 6.01: Epilogue

• The season 6 season premiere of CSI: NY began with a review of the final scene in season 5. The CSIs were having a toast to Jessica Angell, who had been killed. Just then, a car drove by and sent a shower of machine gun bullets through the group as they all hit the floor.
• A month later, we see Mac in the office, going over evidence, Flack with a pretty new girl and Stella getting dressed while an undressed Adam watches from the bed. [Wow! I didn’t see that coming!]
• Mac gets a phone call and joins Danny (in a wheelchair) at a dark room with very large crystal chandeliers. Soon, a woman joins them. She tells them that her brother is just a scared kid caught up with two others in something. They try to get her to tell them what she knows.
• Just then, the elevator doors open and a man in the shadows fires a machine gun at them. They all hit the floor. Danny pulls himself to help the injured woman as Mac goes after the gunman. She dies before she can tell them anything. The gunman gets away.
• When Stella & Hawkes show up at the scene, Danny fills them in. the only thing they learned from the woman was a name…Jake.
• Flack shows up, just back from a leave of absence and says he’s going to help. He and Mac go over security camera footage…no camera in the elevator.
• At the crime scene, Danny flashes back to the night of the bar shooting. Lindsay reminds him that there’s no permanent damage to his spine. He may regain the use of his legs eventually. He’s not so optimistic.
• At the office, Stella scolds Mac for taking Danny and going without backup to talk to the woman. He quotes Shakespeare: “Tempt not a desperate man.”
• Another phone call and Mac tells Stella that it’s happened again.
• The team arrives at the scene where a car drove past a large group of people waiting to get into a club. A car had driven by and fired a machine gun at the crowd. Everyone looks up at a large lighted billboard that reads, “Do we have your attention? Pay us and we’ll stop.”
• A reporter at the scene had tipped them to another similar shooting at a closed restaurant two weeks before. The team goes over everything so far and determines that the shootings are not targeting cops, not with the intent to kill because there had only been one fatality and one of the locations was closed. They want to scare people.
• Just then, a clean-up crime scene technician tells the CSIs that she found an unreported bloody fingerprint on the ceiling of the elevator at the crime office building. Adam gets defensive because he says that he checked everything.
• They realize that Mac must have injured the gunman and that now they may have DNA to identify him.
• Haylen, the cleanup tech tells Adam that she wants to work in the lab and he tells her that the job she’s after is his, so he won’t help her.
• Sid pulled a piece of tempered glass from the woman’s shoulder that Hawkes examined and found that it put her in the bar, the night of the shooting when they were all there.
• Flack shows Stella the body of the missing security guard from the night in the office building. They look at the blood trail to see that the killer tracked the guard there and killed him. The killer was also wounded and took the guard’s sleeve to bandage the wound.
• At the lab, they determine that the woman had worked in the building, so they got copies of the voicemail greetings to compare to the tip line for identification.
• The blood from the elevator matched the blood on the front of the dead guard’s shirt and Hawkes’ investigation told them that the guard had stabbed the killer with the same knife that killed him. They had an identification of the killer.
• The voice recognition software helped them identify the woman as Risa Calaveras. That means that her brother must be Jake Calaveras.
• Stella tells Mac that the shooter was dumped at the hospital and died soon after. They decide to study the hospital security camera footage. They got a license plate number and a suspect’s identity.
• They show up at the suspect’s apartment in time to see Jake Calaveras pointing a gun at him for killing his sister. They tell him that he shouldn’t shoot him and they will take care of him. Jake tells them it’s too late and shoots the other man. They take him into custody.
• In the interrogation room, Jake explained to Mac that the other two had wanted to get the city to “work for them.” He said that Risa had talked him out of going with them the night of the bar shooting. He didn’t know she had been there to try to stop him.
• Adam caught up to Stella in the office to talk about the night they were together. She blurted out that it had been wonderful and stupid and memorable and something they should never do again. He acted relived and agreed with her.
• The episode ended with Stella helping Mac pack up the case files, Lindsay holding her baby and Danny in the wheelchair trying to move his legs. Suddenly, one of his feet barely moved. He looked up and smiled.

CSI: NY – Episode 5.02: Page Turner

At the Maroon 5 concert in the park, a fight in the excited crowd becomes a small riot. The police use soft rounds to take down the fighters. Eliza Carpenter, a college student fleeing the action, collapses and dies, right in front of a city bus. She appears to have suffered a blow to the trachea, probably from a stray riot control soft round. The woman has a lot of face and body paint.

Listening to Mac and Stella assess what might have killed Carpenter, Don seems disturbed that the police may end up taking the blame. They were just doing their job.

Sid, examining the victim’s body, discovers signs of radiation poisoning, marks on her skin beneath the paint, and hair loss. Measuring high levels of radiation on the body, he shuts down the exam room. It isn’t airborne, though, likely transdermal…from the paint. Though Mac and Stella weren’t likely exposed enough to worry, Sid collapses. The CDC rushes in to contain the body and Sid.

Adam matches the writing…shriiimping…on the victim to the graffiti of Kenneth Bamford, aka KA-BLAM. Stella and Danny visit KA-BLAM. They find no signs of radiation, and ask him about his contact with the victim. He remembers her, but not that she complained of any discomfort or pain.

Mac and Lindsay visit Sid, who is still unconscious. They worry that he won’t last long, if they don’t figure out how to counteract the radiation.

Hawkes finds high levels of radiation in Eliza’s liver…600 Rem…but the level is twice as high on her skin. Lindsay comments that she was a “walking ghost”. She could have survived only about a week. She also notes that the radiation would have induced dementia. Toxocology reports indicate high traces of thallium 201. Thallium is highly toxic, but this is also radioactive. At finding this, Hawkes quickly alerts the hospital radiology team to treat Sid with a nasal intubation of Prussian Blue…aka radiogardase…the only treatment for radioactive thallium poisoning.

Stella and Danny search Carpenter’s clothing for signs of the source of the thallium. They find black mold on her shoes. Stella gets a call that another body has shown up, in a movie theater. Film director Dante Gunther was due to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Horror Film Festival, and died in the balcony of the theater. Dante had shown up late, and was acting strangely. His death in the balcony was far enough from the crowd in the theater, that the film continued, even after the team arrived. Apparently, no one made contact with him.

In Gunther’s hotel room, though radiation levels are not unusual, they find a mylar tag fragment in the cuff of a pair of pants, showing high levels of radiation.

Hawkes shows Stella an aged-looking, torn piece of paper. It looks like a todo list: CALL AGENT; GET FESTIVAL DATES/TIMES; 7TH & WEBSTER. The paper has a wet sheen to it.

Adam tells Don and Danny that 60-70% of thallium is used in the electronic and optical lens industry, the rest in nuclear medicine.

Stella finds thallium in the mylar fragment, and that it’s part of an anti-theft tag used mostly in printed material. The paper carbon dates to the 1930s, and appears to have been freeze dried, as in after repair from water damage. Danny says the mold turned out to be black toxic mold, found commonly in water damaged buildings.

Mac and Stella head to the antiquities branch of the public library to search for the thallium. The building suffered a flood in the lower stacks, due to faulty plumbing. In the lower level, in Special Collections, they find radiation in a copy of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The Knot of Eternity symbol on the cover matches the design on Carpenter’s forehead. Eliza must have researched the symbol before visiting KA-BLAM. They also find black mold on table legs in the room. The book is also the source of the mylar tag piece found in Gunther’s hotel room.

Doctors treat Sid with the Prussian Blue. Hawkes explains to Mac that it speeds the removal of thallium from the body. Meanwhile lawyer Paulson announces his intention to file a wrongful death suit against the city’s library. Paulson tells Mac that his wife worked in the main branch of the library…in Special Collections…and died with the same symptoms as Carpenter and Gunther. The family doctor said she had lupus, but seeing the news of radiation, led him to believe this was the actual cause. He shows Mac a painting he made of his wife, while the couple took an art class together. Paulson agrees to let Mac exhume his wife to investigate her death.

Stella is gleeful to find out that Sid is alert and responsive. Don tells Stella that none of the books can be removed from Special Collections. Carpenter and Gunther had both checked into Special Collections, within a week of each other. Only ten people have signed in, in the past six months. One of them, Timothy Pram, actually read the affected book. Pram also has a record including vandalism at chemical labs, and at Three Mile Island. He now resides at 7th and Webster, the intersection in Dante Gunther’s notes.

Stella and Don find Pram at the intersection, in a Buddhist temple. Changed, thanks to his newfound faith, he regrets his earlier protests, and claims to be innocent of any recent crimes. He denies knowing Carpenter. Gunther, however, had called him recently, asking about Buddhist views on preparations for death. He also told him to refer to the Book of the Dead.

Lindsay finds a small fleck of sea sponge in the Book of the Dead. The sponge has traces of chitin. Adam notes that it appears more consistent with an insect than with crustaceans or other sealife. Why would it be in a sea sponge?

Hawkes shows Mac the 3-D scan of Molly Paulson’s body. When exhumed, her body had pinned the radiation detectors. Enlarging the stomach image, they find lesions, indicating that Molly Paulson swallowed the thallium.

Danny and Stella deduce that, since Molly Paulson had died earlier, and from ingestion, she was the intended target. The other two victims were likely just collateral damage. Who, then, wanted Molly dead? Don shows up, and leads them to the office of Lawrence Wagner, Molly’s assistant at the library. Molly had written him three times for not showing up to work. Once she passed, he never showed up for work again. In Wagner’s office, the team finds a collection of smoke detectors, probably for their radioactive sources, as well as iodine tablets. The tablets would have protected the thyroid from absorbing too much radiation.

At Wagner’s home, they find him building a reactor. He exhibits a lot of agitation…almost paranoia…as he explains how he is searching for cheaper energy alternatives. He claims to have spent two years accumulating the supplies he needed to build a reactor. He says, though, that Molly had never been near his “work”. Among his radioactive materials, though, they don’t find thallium in his belongings.

Lindsay determines that the red chitin found in the sponge belongs to a beetle commonly used to make red paint pigments. KA-BLAM, though, uses an airbrush. Mac tells the team that there’s another artist involved.

Three years ago, Paulson represented a chemical plant in Chinatown. The plant had imported multiple radioactive agents, including thallium. Knowing his wife already had lupus, he feed her the thallium to collect the insurance money: $500,000. He also secretly painted the Book of the Dead to validate his claim that the library killed his wife. The additional victims would allow him to pursue a lawsuit, and claim much more money. Once discovered by Mac, Paulson confesses that, after working hard defending the chemical company, and looking after his sick wife, he just wanted to retire.

Mac, Hawkes, and Don visit a recoving Sid, bearing chips and water, to watch the Rangers game.

Episode 5.01: Veritas

Stella is in one of the choppers, as the force searches for Mac and “Joe”, his kidnapper. She receives a call with a tip that the car may be near or on the George Washington Bridge (GWB), headed for Fort Lee, NJ. Mac, however, pops up, on screen, in the river. He makes his way to the bank, and into the brush in the Jersey City side. He flags down a car, and borrows the scared driver’s phone to call Stella.

Divers pull a body from the Hudson. It’s Derek James, the suspect in the shooting of the bank manager and his wife, not “Joe”.

They believe “Joe” is at large, but New Jersey police will only allow them to take crime scene photos. They won’t release the body or the vehicle, or agree to a joint investigation. Stella takes photos, including those of a yellow flower barette in the back seat, bullet holes in the front passenger window, red paint on the bumper; as well as 3D images of tire tracks around the scene. Adam goes to work on the data.

Mac, of course, rushes back to work, despite his having a mild concussion. Mac tells Danny and Hawkes that he keyed the car’s radio mic with his knee, while he was driving. He tasks Danny with checking on the bank scene processing, and Hawkes to check with NYPD dispatch for the recording of the radio transmission from the car. Perhaps Joe said something important that Mac doesn’t remember.

Derek’s entrance wound angle, and abrasions below the wound, seem to indicate that the shot was fired from below, and with the gun upside-down. Did he shoot himself? An incision above his navel shows signs of post-mortem sawing. He also showed injuries consistent with the Heimlich Maneuver.

As Mac takes off his shirt in the locker room, a bullet falls to the floor. Mac had no gunshot wounds, but his shirt had mild burn and abrasion marks around the right armpit. Mac and Lindsay deduce that the bullet must have been slowed by the window glass, and perhaps from its being “stale”, causing it merely to tumble at him. So, “Joe” must believe he had killed Mac, and had dumped him and Derek James into the Hudson.

On the radio recording, Hawkes finds a phone dialing in the background. “Joe” must have called someone.

Danny figures that the barette in the back seat must have fallen out of Joe’s clothing. DNA in a hair from the barette match that from the bank phone that Joe used. So, it must be Joe’s daughter’s.

Adam shows Mac and Danny that the tire tracks indicate no load change. So, Derek must have driven there without bringing the $2 million; perhaps the reason that Joe killed Derek. They agree that it may also mean that Joe will be looking for the money, somewhere in Manhattan.

Joe is angrily, and frantically, searching a house. The call that Joe made in the car was to Derek James. Hawkes tracked down the call record, and the number initiating the call. Mac calls his Joe’s cellphone. It wasn’t enough to determine his location, but Mac notices that he seemed to be expecting a call. So, someone else is involved!

Adam tells Flack that he checked the cameras from the tunnels and bridges into the city. He found video of Joe paying a toll, and driving a red car. The VIN from the car door indicates the owner of the car. Flack insists on taking care of it, but wants two hours before Adam tells Mac and Stella.

Mac begins to remember his last moments in the car: Joe’s cold-cocking him, and his waking and swimming out.

Danny tells Mac that Joe’s fingerprints match those from a 6-year-old robbery case. Also, he found that the bullet from Mac’s shirt matches a fragment from Derek’s head, but not the one from Joe’s shooting the ceiling in the bank. They believe Derek took the first shot at Mac, then turned the gun on Joe. They must have struggled, with Joe forcing the gun up toward Derek’s head; leading to the upward trajectory of the bullet into Derek’s face, and upside-down position of the muzzle.

Mac asks Danny to get his kit from the bank. Joe pushed it with his foot, and had dirt on his shoe. Mac believes it could help point them to Joe’s real identity.

Flack visits his sister, Samantha. She tells him that Lauren Salinas borrowed it. He’s worried Samantha is involved somehow.

Lindsay finds Mimosa perdica roots on Mac’s kit.

Adam confesses to Mac that he told Flack about the red car before telling him, and that it belongs to Flack’s sister, Samantha. Mac receives a call, and leaves.

Mac meets Flack at the scene where Samantha’s car was found. In the trunk, Flack finds the body of a young woman…maybe Lauren Salinas. Mac recognizes her as the woman who loaned him her cellphone.

Danny interrogates Samantha. She loaned her car to Lauren, who said it would just be a few days while her car was in the shop. She says Lauren hadn’t done anything to indicate she’d come into some money, recently. She did have a boyfriend, but Samantha had never seen him. She doesn’t recognize photos of Derek or Joe. As Samantha and Flack walk out of the station, an arrested man guy says hello to her. Flack is incensed that she’s hanging out with guys like that.

Lauren bled to death, but she had water in her lungs and signs of respiratory stress. She also had restraint wounds on her wrists. Mac deduces that Joe was expecting a call from Lauren, and the money. When she arrived, he must have restrained her, and tried to force her to tell him where the money was.

Stella finds wood debris on Mac’s case consistent with old railroad ties. She and Mac search near some abandoned tracks, and find the M. perdica. They also find loosened soil hiding passports and drivers licenses with Joe’s photo. Joe calls Mac. He must be watching them. He claims he’ll find his money, before they find him. He also says that Lauren’s death was an accident. The call is still too short to trace.

Adam and Lindsay test the passports. One has a legitimate State Department watermark, so Ethan Scott is Joe’s real name. Lindsay runs the name through the database.

Danny runs Lauren Salinas’ fingerprints, and finds she was a teller at the bank, and had called in sick the day of the robbery. So, she was the inside person. Stella produces New Jersey findings that Derek had throat lacerations with steel and nickel filings. Danny found Derek and Joe’s prints on the bank manager’s keys. Each key was numbered and one was missing. Derek must have swallowed it, and Ethan dug it out through the post-mortem incision in Derek’s abdomen. So, the money must still be in the bank.

Stella goes to the bank alone. As she looks around, she hears Joe fleeing on the second floor of the bank. She gives chase. She catches up to him on a rooftop, but he surprises her, hitting her with his duffel. As she falls over the railing on the edge of the roof, she grabs the duffel. Both clutch tight onto the bag, Ethan (Joe) from the railing, and Stella, dangling a couple stories over the next-door building. Stella manages to grab hold of the metal platform, as Ethan snatches the bag away and flees.

Lindsay finds that Ethan has a wife and daughter, Allison and Emma Scott. They live in Manhattan. Emma was out of school, that day. So, they’re on the run. Adam has found a purchase made for three train tickets from Poughkeepsie to Toronto, on Allison Scott’s credit card.

Stella finds Allison Scott in the train station, and tells her about Ethan’s actions. Allison is surprised at the news, and doesn’t seem to believe, at first.

As Ethan is walking toward Allison and Emma on the train platform, Mac calls his cellphone. Ethan continues his bravado, until Mac walks up behind him, and undercover police all over the platform reveal their weapons.

Mac: You’re under arrest, for the murder of Derek James, Lauren Salinas, kidnapping and attempted murder of a crime scene investigator, armed robbery, grand theft auto, assault and battery; but most of all… for pissing me off.

CSI: NY – Episode 5.01 – Veritas

When we last saw Mac Taylor on CSI: NY, he was being held captive by the “bank robber” and was being made to drive to places unknown. We were made to wait until season 5 premieres to find out his fate.

“Veritas” – In the aftermath of a bank heist gone bad, Mac wakes up in a submerged car with no memory of how he got there, on the fifth season premiere of CSI: NY Wednesday, Sept. 24 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
