CSI Vegas Casting: NOT Being John Malkovich
As sad as I was to hear that William Petersen was moving on from his starring role on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, I’m sad to hear that it didn’t work out with one of his potential replacements, John Malkovich. Malkovich has proven his capacity for portraying brilliant, yet unstable, characters. It’s really very scary. According to Maureen Ryan of The Chicago Tribune, executive producer Naren Shankar couldn’t share details on other actors they are talking to.
Asked about similarities between the new character and Dexter, the lovable serial killer of serial killers, Shankar made it sound like the CSI character is more the converse of Dexter. Dexter is a serial killer trying to discover his own humanity. The academic joining CSI in episode 9 will be a man trying to understand if he could be a serial killer. Knowing that he has genetic characteristics known among killers, he feels he must explore the nature of real killers to understand himself.
Of course, the way things pan out for the character will depend a lot on who the actor will be. They still have a little time to cast him, since they won’t begin production on episode 5 and beyond, until mid-August. Next thing you know, though, we’ll be watching him.
Who would you like to see play the new character?

I have also seen reports that John Malkovich was offered the role but turned it down – link. [...]
