Comparing CSI to Medium

Katelyn who writes Medium Dreams, and I decided to do an interesting character comparison for you. She wrote her idea of a comparison between Medium’s main character, Allison DuBois, and CSI: Vegas’s Gil Grissom. We both thought they would be a fun pair to think about. Here are my thoughts about their differences and similarities.
Allison DuBois |
Gil Grissom |
Differences: |
She is a psychic that helps the police department and groups that find missing people using her psychic abilities. |
He is a crime scene investigator who solves crimes by gathering a examining physical evidence. |
She uses information that comes to her in dreams and flashes of insight only. |
He uses bits of physical trace evidence gathered at crime scenes and from suspects. |
She relies on her emotions and her feelings over physical evidence. Often, the two are conflicting. |
He relies solely on the physical evidence, and allows no feelings to enter into the deductions he makes. |
She often doubts her own flashes of inspiration until they prove themselves to be correct. |
Gil always trusts the physical evidence. |
The character of Allison Dubois is based on an actual person who helps solve crimes using her psychic abilities. |
The character of Gil Grissom is a totally fictional character and is most likely a composite of many of the common personality characteristics of good CSIs. |
She is very family oriented and her husband and children are always her priority. |
Gil is mostly a loner and likes his privacy. With the exception of Sara Sidle, he rarely shows emotion and his work is his priority. |
Similarities: |
On her show, Allison is always able to piece together the pieces of information she gets and always helps solve whatever crime is involved. |
On his show, Gil is always able to find enough information to solve the crime involved, using scientific methods. |
Allison is located in Phoenix, Arizona and most all of her work is done in the Southwest area of the US. |
Gil is located in Las Vegas, Nevada and most all of his work is done in the Southwest area of the US. |
Allison helps solve murders, kidnappings, missing persons and sexual assault cases. |
Gil helps solve murders, kidnappings, missing persons and sexual assault cases. |
Personally, I’m a fan of both shows and truly enjoy both characters. But I think it’s interesting how very different they both are and still they are very successful.
It makes me wonder what it would be like to see the two characters have to work on a case together. Gil would be forced to allow things other than physical evidence to be considered in his investigation and I think it might be rather disturbing to him. He just isn’t used to having to do that.
But I think Allison would be able to adjust quite nicely. After all, she’s used to working with skeptical left-brain-thinking detectives all the time and manages to win them over with her accuracy.
What are your thoughts about the two characters and/or the two shows? Would you enjoy seeing Gil have to work with someone like Allison? Leave a comment to share your thoughts!

I think Grissom would find it difficult to work with Allison, just because it lacks the evidence he relies on, but I think he’d be open-minded enough to give her a chance. It would be an interesting dynamic.

I agree. We got to see the CSI/Without a Trace crossover this season, maybe the show could feature a psychic next season, to see how the CSIs would handle it. I think it would be fun.
