CSI: Vegas - Episode 8.07: “Good Bye & Good Luck” Discussion Points

by Lynn on November 18th, 2007

csivnormal_db01.jpgSorry I’m just getting to write about this episode, but my TiVo has died a horrible death and I had to watch it online. I guess I just worked its little guts out…. (Not to worry, I have a new one, so future eps will be fine.)

Anyway, this was the episode where Sara Sidle left the team. We saw Hanna, that prodigy/psychopath character that got under Sara’s skin before, return and destroy her brother, his girlfriend, and somehow, Sara’s ability to go on as a CSI. I thought it was important for us to discuss our thoughts about the show and Sara’s departure.
(follow the jump for more)

What do you think about they way they had Sara leave? Here are some questions to get the discussion started, but please, don’t limit your comments to these:

  1. We all know that Sara was in foster care as a child and had some pretty awful experiences, but I’m wondering why that didn’t make her stronger and less vulnerable to crazy people like Hanna.
  2. What was it about this girl that managed to break Sara’s spirit?
  3. Why do you think Sara left all her things in her locker when she left?
  4. How do you think the time in the desert contributed to her leaving?
  5. Why would she leave her one true love, Grissom, instead of just quitting her job? (That one make NO sense to me at all…)
  6. How do you expect Grissom to react to her leaving?

Let’s get a discussion going. Leave a comment to share your thoughts! I want to hear what you think!

i was also wondering why she left all her things( pictures, everything). is jorga(spelling) fox leaving the show for good? and just when grissom finally opens up his heart and you see a different side of him, she leaves. we won’t see him have another girlfriend again.

    1. We all know that Sara was in foster care as a child and had some pretty awful experiences, but I’m wondering why that didn’t make her stronger and less vulnerable to crazy people like Hannah.

I would have to say this is likely due to character development, or poor forethought.

    2. What was it about this girl that managed to break Sara’s spirit?

Probably Sara seeing so much of herself in Hannah, and her reoccurring character pet peeve of “the ones that got away”.

    3. Why do you think Sara left all her things in her locker when she left?

Closure for her team, and trying to leave the past behind.

    4. How do you think the time in the desert contributed to her leaving?

It scared her, and made her think if what she was doing was really worth the risk, or if she was even making a difference.

    5. Why would she leave her one true love, Grissom, instead of just quitting her job? (That one make NO sense to me at all…)

Grissom connects her to all her old feelings and memories. It just wouldn’t work.

    6. How do you expect Grissom to react to her leaving?

Grissom will be Grissom. Cold and unemotional on the outside, but it will tear him up on the inside, and he won’t let anyone know.

I think that she made a good choice because she couldn’t bare to stay back there with all of the pain that , that place brought her it was way better than her blowing the cap to her head . and the only thing that i dont agree with is her leaving grissom like that

Maybe she wants to leave, for the moment but isnt ready to leave totally, if she had taken all her things with her, she will have been gone for good, but i belove that she just needs some time to be har self again. Grissom is probably not going to share his feelings about it, but he will still want her to get back. Grissom is the reason why Sara got on to the team, and i think it will be to hard to her, to keep him but not the job, there will to much remindings of the job.

i googled jorja fox and it came up with jorja fox leaving so i went there and there were all kinds of news articles about her leaving. she wants to pursue other things and she said leaving was a hard thing to do. so it sounds like she’s leaving for good. she was also on the view talking about it.

Sara was raised by strangers who were paid to take care of her, Hannah was raised, up on a pedestal by her over indulgent parents. Sara has a slight self image problem Hannah doesn’t

Hannah had a sence of entitlement that was instilled by her indulgent parents, who alway reminded people about how special Hannah was after a while Hannah must have come to truely believe that she was better than everone else and therefore if you get in her way, you die and Marlon will take the blame (whether he wanted to or not)

Why do you think Sara left all her things in her locker when she left? She coming back.

How do you think the time in the desert contributed to her leaving? You think your going to die, you reflect back on your life, and when your rescued you don’t get counselling for PTSD that will add to your angst.

Why would she leave her one true love, Grissom, instead of just quitting her job? (That one make NO sense to me at all…) She didn’t want him to see her breakdown emotionally and physically.

How do you expect Grissom to react to her leaving? As usual, stoic, without much emotion, and when confronted he’ll admit only to be worried about her and how he’ll wait for her forever.

    1. I don’t think that it was a question of vulnerability when it came to her interactions with Hannah. Of course, Sara had issues from being in foster care and the situation that caused her to be in foster care. She was upset that a kid could manipulate the evidence and the investigators with such ease. Sara felt that it was their fault that Hannah got away with it the first time. Hannah was being a spoiled brat and wanted to make sure Marlon knew that she was the reason he was free and that she could be the reason that he wasn’t.

    2. I am not sure that it was Hannah that broke her spirit. She felt the case was slipping away again because of this manipulative child. She knew that it was only a matter of time before Marlon was stuck rotting in jail and there was nothing that she could do about it. I think the spirit breaker was when she seemed to take a certain pleasure from telling Hannah about Marlon’s death. She did not like who she was becoming.

    3. I think that she left her things in her locker because she will come back for them. I think it is another way to let Grissom know that she is not leaving him behind for good.

    4. The time in the desert made Sara realize that no matter how many people they put away, there are always more. It is a never-ending battle. On her personal front, it made her realize that she needed to face her own personal demons before she can move on and make a life of her own - whether it is with Grissom or not.
    (WITH is my preference!!!)

    5. I don’t think of it as her leaving Grissom. It is a mental health break. The trauma of what happened combined with her past is forcing this. Yes, she has everything she ever wanted in regards to her and Grissom, but she still worries that there is something in her personal character that could be destructive or evil. That is why when she saw that she was enjoying Hannah’s reaction to her brother’s death she knew she needed a break from it all. She did not leave him to LEAVE him - she left for him. She never broke up with him. It was not that kind of letter.

    6. I think Grissom will carry on - throwing himself into his work. He loves her dearly and sees that she needs this. They will be in touch. I don’t think he will wait forever, he will go get her, but he will give her some time to work things out.
