CSI:NY Episode 4.05 Recap: “Down the Rabbit Hole”

by Jason on October 30th, 2007

Our episode starts with Mac doing a little bit of late night jogging and a janitor listening to some Latin music. He then enters a closet and locks the door behind him so he can dance with all the mannequins that are stored in the closet.

As he’s dancing with the mannequin he dips her and her head falls off. When he pursues the head into the other mannequin bodies he sees a real body, and it’s dead. We then see the green-haired girl we saw in all the spoiler photo shots for this episode. Sheldon Hawkes is now on the scene and taking photos.

When the rest of the team arrives and gets the explanation of the scene, Stella notices that Mac isn’t sleeping well still and asks him about it. As Mac is examining the body, his phone starts ringing, it’s 3:33am. Sheldon says he should take it, “it’s early” and “probably important”. Mac ignores the call and Stella notices.

Here’s the deal. The entire episode is spent with Mac running around the worlds of Second Life. Some of the items were a little contrived in my opinion, but I’m also not that familiar with Second Life. How many of you are gamers in Second Life?

I do think that this was a really good episode of CSI:NY though. The plot line is interesting and the players were interesting as well. We found out that Stella is still being actively pursued by the forged documents specialist. Mac has come to the realization the his relationship with Peyton is over because neither one of them can leave the places they call “home”. Mac’s still can’t sleep, probably for a variety of reasons, but the major one is probably his regular calls at 3:33am.

After reading some of the notes about this episode on TV.com, I found out that acute multiple sclerosis isn’t fatal. “Johny”’s plotline was interesting to think about someone with a serious medical condition or terminal illness being able to live an interact in a game like Second Life and be healthy, normal and accepted is pretty cool.

The episode ends with the killer, who took over the avatar of “Venus”, going to the apartment of a congressman to kill him. She’s successful at her kill, but Mac and the rest of the team almost catch her. The fact that they don’t leads us up to the cooperative effort that’s now taking place between CSI:NY and Second Life, for gamers to help capture the killer.

What a brilliant expansion of the plotline into the virtual world and to the audience themselves. Are you in Second Life? Are you going to pursue this plotline? I’d love to hear your story. Just e-mail me at jason@b5media.com with the details.

I enjoyed this episode (much, much better than the one before). I thought they did a good job of using Second Life in a way that made sense in the case. I also like that the assassin got away in the end. It’s nice when the bad guy (girl in this case) gets away occasionally.
