CSI: Miami Recap for Episode 6.03: Inside Out

by Lynn on October 8th, 2007

csi-m-604_04-small.jpgThe show began with Kyle, Horatio’s son being arraigned for kidnapping and unlawful detention. The judge told him that he would be tried as an adult and then he told him that he would be remanded until his next hearing. Kyle was cuffed and led to a bus headed toward the jail where he would be held.

A group of real bad-asses, supposedly the “modern day Jesse James” and sidekicks were led out of the court to board the same bus. There was a throng of admirers for the nasty men, but they would have to be remanded in the same jail as Kyle.

Horatio suggested to Det. Tripp that the “bus driver looks like he could use some help.”

Tripp replied, “I’m on it,” and he boarded the bus to keep an eye out for Kyle.

On the way to correctional facility, the bus was hit head-on by a pick-up truck. The bus driver was knocked unconscious and Trip was thrown to the ground. Just then, a mob of people started to pound on the bus with clubs and other objects and the nasty thugs inside beat up Tripp and escaped. Kyle ran away too.

The thugs got into a waiting red SUV and sped away. Trip struggled to stop them but couldn’t. He called for help and after all the blows to his head, started to hallucinate. He thought there was an armed man pointing a gun at him and he called for the man to drop the gun. When he didn’t see the man move, he fired and shot what he thought was the man. Instead, it turned out to be an unarmed civilian woman.

Horatio showed up and after questioning Tripp, he said that he was going to find Kyle.

Calleigh started to process the crime scene and Tripp told her that he had a bad feeling about the whole thing. She told him that Internal Affairs couldn’t question him until the scene had been processed and she started to work.

Ryan Wolfe showed up at the scene to talk to Natalia. He gave her the name of a guy that worked at the shooting range who could work with her to help her with her target shooting skills. She told him that she was slammed with all the work from the buss scene and would try to make it, but she wasn’t sure she could.

Then, Kyle found Horatio and went to him to explain why he had left the bus area. He told Horatio that he had only run to get away from the thugs and that he had seen them leave in a blue SUV. Kyle told Horatio that if he had to go to jail, he wanted Horatio to walk him in. Horatio told him to get in his Hummer and they had a stop to make.

They stopped at a barber shop and got Kyle a haircut that would make him look older. Horatio gave Kyle advice about how to act on the inside, and had Kyle repeat it back to him to be sure that Kyle understood. Then Horatio cuffed Kyle and they headed to the jail.

At the morgue, Alexx showed Calleigh that the woman that Tripp had shot couldn’t hear anything, since she had an implant to help her sort out sounds, because without it she was deaf. Somehow she had lost the external piece before she was shot. She didn’t know to get out of the way of the bullet because she couldn’t hear Tripp call out.

Alexx gave Calleigh the bullet that she had taken from the victim and Calleigh was relived that it wasn’t a match to the kind of gun Tripp carries.

She matched the bullet to a gun from a guy who had cuts on his hands, but denied having been near the scene. When pushed, he told her that he had been there because one of the thugs had offered $2 million dollars to anyone who could bust him out.

He said that he dropped his gun and since it was a mob scene, he had just left. He also told her that one of the felons had stolen his motorcycle.

They put out an APB and found one of the escaped guys with the stolen Harley and took him into custody.

Natalia told Tripp that she needed to get some time in at the range to get ready for firing tests coming up. She took the motorcycle’s keys, put them on the dash of her car and went to the range. (Uh-oh…chain of custody issue…?)

Horatio questioned Oscar, the guy who stole the Harley and told him that if he gave up the other two, he would have the grand theft auto charges reduced to a misdemeanor. Just then, Oscar’s attorney showed up and told him not to talk.

The attorney said that he had an expert witness that would dispute the evidence found near the motorcycle and that Oscar would not be charged. The witness was Wolfe. (Not the way to get reinstated…)

Natalia got back to the lab and processed the keys. Ryan showed up to get the evidence for the defense (expert witnesses and don’t usually pick up evidence, but ok) and told her that he was going to challenge her protocol because she hadn’t taken the keys right to the lab. She accused him of setting her up.

The district attorney told Natalia that if she could discredit Wolfe, the problem could be avoided and Oscar would be easy to convict. She refused to rat out a former team member. The DA told her that she had just tossed her career.

Delko tested the trace amounts of the paint from the SUV and found that the reason two witnesses said the SUV was red and blue was because it was painted with reflective paint that would appear to change colors at a different angle. They tracked it to the only place in South Beach that can do that kind of paint job.

Calleigh & Delko went to the place and found the SUV. Inside were parts of the cuffs that the owner had cut off the two fugitives. He had helped them for the $2 million.

He told them that his brother would die without dialysis and that he needed the money for the treatment. But when the thugs paid him, they gave him a duffle bag full of packets of heroin. Not the cash he had expected. They arrested him for possession.

Ryan showed up at the location where Tripp and the team were processing the stolen motorcycle. Wolfe looked around and found a .45 caliber handgun, the same as the bullet that was taken from the deaf victim.

Ryan took it straight to the lab and Calleigh confirmed that it was the gun that had killed the victim. Ryan had helped the prosecution’s case while being paid to help the defense.

Natalia tested the DNA found on the gun and it didn’t match Oscar. It matched the man who owned the motorcycle. It matched the cuts on his hands.

He told Horatio that the deaf victim had been motioning to the thugs to get into her car. (She must have wanted the money too.) He shot her to keep her from getting the money he hoped to get. Oscar took the gun and the motorcycle.

By tracking the DNA found in the packets of heroin, they found the owner of the waterfront property where the Thugs were. When Horatio got there, one of them told him that they had found out that Kyle was his son and that they were gong to kill him while he was in custody. There was a shoot-out and Horatio shot the thug.

Horatio called and told the guards to keep Kyle in sight. Tripp then told him that the deaf woman had been engaged to one of the thugs and that’s why she had been trying to help them escape. She had also read Horatio & Tripp’s lips during a conversation about Kyle and had told the thugs that he was Horatio’s son.

When Horatio got to the jail, Kyle was missing because the guard had been distracted by a fight. He questioned the guy who owned the waterfront property (and who had his DNA on the heroin packets). Things got ugly.

Meanwhile, Tripp & Delko tracked down the remaining thug at the waterfront. He tried to bargain by offering to tell them where Kyle was. Delko told him that he was too late because Horatio had his own methods.

After getting tough with the thug in the jail, they guy finally told Horatio where to find Kyle. He was in the pipe chase between the cell blocks.

Horatio found him gagged and tied up.

He untied him and told him that he was his father.

Horatio then told Oscar that he would reduce his third strike if he would keep Kyle safe on the inside. Oscar agreed that Kyle would be totally safe on the inside.

I like how Horatio managed to take care of Kyle even though he was in such danger on the inside. It was very clever.

We didn’t really get to see what Kyle’s reaction was to the news that Horatio was his father. I imagine this story line will continue for a while, at least.

I liked this episode. Lots of Horatio and that is why I watch the show. He told Kyle he was his father in a straight-forward manner and I, too, would have liked to see Kyle’s reaction.

I was confused by the storyline that involved Ryan and Natalia although I thought Natalia’s expression was priceless when she thought Ryan set her up. I was proud of her for taking the “highroad” and not giving Rebecca any info to use against Ryan. And weren’t we surprised to see Rebecca?

It is my thinking that Kyle was to be tried as an adult because the judge was one of the judges in the sex scandal from season 3. Was he the guy who promised Horatio his “solved” rate would dwindle? Didn’t look like him but could have been a different actor playing the same role.

All in all, an interesting, face paced hour. Good one.

No, Karen, the judge wasn’t THE Judge Ratner from previous seasons.

I’m enjoying the Horatio/Kyle arc. It has so much potential for future episodes. Any story that brings some of that well-known but little-seen (in recent times) Caruso intensity works for me.

If tptb don’t screw it up, push too hard & too fast, the storyline will work (Marisol comes to mind as a horrific example). Whew!

At the opposite extreme, we have Horatio & Yelina, indulging in eye-sex for over 5 years. Using that as a reference, Kyle could be the oldest living teenager.

Let’s see if they can strike a realistic balance.

That was an awsome episode. Kyle is like the hottest dude in the freaking world. He is SOO sexy. Even after Horatio made him cut off his EXTREMELY SEXY hair he was still FINE. He is the only reason I started watching the show.
