CSI:NY - "The Deep" Jason’s Recap

by Jason on October 7th, 2007

The episode begins with a yacht race between New York and New Jersey crews with a couple on a jet-ski running around distracting the competitors. They end up running over a dead diver who looks like he’s been in the water quite awhile.

The diver is messed up! Dr. Sheldon Hawkes says he’s probably been dead and submerged for a few weeks. During the autopsy they find starfish inside of the body cavity and have some cool video of starfish eating into the guys internal organs.  Victim had prosthetic ear that has a serial number on it, which gets them a name and leads them to a professional dive instructor shop.

The victim was a professional dive instructor. His partner, Matt Campbell, is looking conspicuous as he’s been missing for a few weeks too. They get a picture of both of them with some of their dive students and the team starts interviewing and questioning them.

Danny and Sheldon find that the breathing apparatus had a puncture hole from what would appear to be a hypodermic needle. From the contents of some of the starfish stomachs, Lindsay determines that he was killed in some old submerged subway cars that were dumped to create artificial habitats. Danny and Det. Flack go diving and find the body of another diver.

Detective Bonasera and Lindsay find some heavy coins on the second victim and she goes to a coin collector. Bonasera also meets the forgery expert we’ve been hearing so much about.

The coins are fakes and the evidence leads the team to the husband of one of the dive instructor’s students. The husband says he doesn’t mind about his wife’s extra-curricular exploits.

Danny and Sheldon go back out on the water and find a shipwrecked old sailing vessel. They find a syringe that could be the murder weapon, but it could also just be your normal garbage. They also find a old chest which was empty, but their metal detector finds some stray gold coins.

Methane gas displaces the water and a large wooden post falls on Sheldon and pins him. Lindsay and Mac are watching on video what’s taking place and they lose what’s going on. They get him free by cutting him out of his tank and equipment and sharing Danny’s oxygen to return to the surface.

Lindsay and Danny are back in the lab checking out the syringe and coins they found. Lindsay is flirting with Danny and saying that Sheldon was lucky to have Danny down there with them. The coins are a match and the syringe has traces of cyanide in it, confirming it as the murder weapon, but it’s been reused as well.

Bonasera continues looking for the ship masthead. She goes down to the street for a coffee and meets the same forged document specialist. He swiped her card off the counter and allegedly was going to call her. He keeps hitting on her and Bonasera shrugs it off.

Additional evidence in the syringe leads them back to the apartment of two dive students from Albania. As they approach him at his apartment he jumps on Flack and they chase him down. The backpack he was carrying had loads of fake passports and a hand-gun in it. Bonasera and two NYPD officers go back into the apartment where they find material for building a bomb.

The shipwreck was all a ploy to give them time in the water to look to plant a bomb in a specific area. Mac Taylor interrogates one of the guys with some serious angst. I’m sure he’s still got some pent up anger towards the events of 9/11. The target was United Nations. The target was in a motorcade but was rerouted on protocol after a death threat was called into the motorcade. The helipad is located right on the east river. The get to the diver in the water and he activates the bomb, but the coast guard find it too and jam the signal from his trigger device just in time.

The other thing we find out in this episode is that Mac lets Stella know that he changed his office extension because he’s continued to get mysterious phone calls. He told her that the phone calls he’s gotten in London have followed him here. The plot line wasn’t discussed anymore in this episode after that.
