CSI: NY Recap of Episode 4.01 - Can You Hear Me Now?
The show began with Mac boarding a plane in the UK on his way back to New York alone. He did have lipstick on his cheek, so it looks like things haven’t ended, but why is Peyton not going back with him? Hmmm…
Mac gets an urgent call on the plane telling him that there’s a helicopter waiting fro him when the plane lands and a crime scene at the Statue of Liberty. A couple had been “intimate” atop the statue earlier, now we find that the woman, a security guard for the site, has been murdered. (She’s fully dressed, but dead.)
I did notice one funny thing, though. As Mac and Det. Flack come out of the stairwell after climbing hundreds of stairs to the top where the body was, they weren’t even panting or red in the face…as someone who has done it, that’s not too believable…I’m just saying…
Then Danny gets out on the outside of the statue to test the massive amount of blood running down the face of Lady Liberty and finds that there are 12 different samples of blood, but not from the dead victim. Her blood is all where they found her. (Creepy!)
Then we were introduced to AJ Buckley’s character, Adam Ross, who was at home in bed (with fellow lab rat, Kendall) when he was supposed to be in the lab.
Then Mac explained to Stella that Peyton is staying on in London for a few more weeks. Then he tells her about some strange phone calls he got every night at exactly 3:33 am in the hotel. A couple of seconds of silence, then a dial tone. It was obvious that it freaked him out a bit. He switched hotels and got more calls at the new hotel. Scotland Yard was unable to trace the calls.

Then, Det. Flack tells Mac & Stella that the only window of opportunity that someone would have to do this murder was during the 45 minute security system re-boot that only happens once every three months. There’s a missing security guard and they think that’s where they should focus attention.
Then someone finds a viewer with a blood spot on it and it’s been wired to stay in exactly the same place. They look through it and there’s a man on a rooftop, watching them.

It turns out that the guy on the rooftop is dead. He’s not the security guard, so they need to find out who he is and how he’s connected. For some reason, he’s orange colored and has a puncture wound through his neck. They open his jacket and the massage, “Two more will die.” is written on his shirt in what looks like blood.

When the coroner was examining the body, he used some cool sort of holographic type of imaging thing to look at a 3-D model of the guy’s head, including his brain. It reminds me of the sort of things they have on the show Bones. I don’t know if the technology is real or not, but it’s very cool.
Turns out that the guy’s name is Damien Brock and he was on parole for money laundering. He was orange because of the orange-spruce scented household cleaning product that was used to embalm him. A little rectangular metal thing with bumps on it was found in the guy’s throat. His blood was some of the blood dumped on the outside of the Statue of Liberty. (Totally creepy!)
Then, Kendall shows up with the wire that had been wrapped around the viewfinder. It turned out to be a piano wire (the note “A”) from a high-end, European piano.
Lindsey told Danny and Hawkes that the rubbery substance that had been on the female vic was condom spray (???) She demonstrated its use on a large test tube. They seemed as surprised as I was. After they made some cute comments, she put the spray can in Danny’s pocket and patted it before walking away. (Cute!)
Then Mac used a very cool type of blood spatter simulator that actually seemed to freeze the droplet of blood in the air so he could manipulate them. (How’d they do that?) Somehow, Mac figured out that the missing security guard had been standing in front of the first vic and that a couple of drops of blood had been deflected by his badge. He couldn’t have killed her. (I’m a little baffled about how he made that leap, but ok…)
Then Adam figured out that the metal bumpy thing was the guts of a music box. It was a certain early piece by Mozart and was specially made for a person named Nova Kent. (Damn! These folks are good!)
Stella & Danny went to see the musician/singer named Nova Kent and asked her about the vic that had her music box piece in his throat. She said she didn’t know him. She said that she lost the music box over a year ago and that she moves a lot. Just then, a package with what looked like black lilies in it was delivered to her. The card attached to it read “SSSHHH” (Someone was telling her not to talk…)
Next the arm of the missing security guard showed up in the morgue. It came from the bay and had been severed by a boat propeller. They knew they would have to find the rest of the body. They found the spray condom stuff on the arm too. Mac deduced that the two had been intimate on the arm overlook and when they came downstairs they interrupted the vandal and he had killed her. Then the male guard was used to get off the island.
Mac said, “There are two more people out there that the killer wants dead. We have to get to them before he does.”
Flack and Stella went to the home of the dead parolee and Stella realized that she had investigated an unsolved murder of a young woman there a year before. The landlord told her that he had been the primary suspect for a while. He asked if they could let him know if they found out anything about her murder.
They opened the door to the apartment and found that the vic had been embalmed in the bathtub there. Then the phone rang and the answering machine message was the voice of the victim being tortured and saying something about a white van and giving a license plate number. They decide that the killer recorded the outgoing message while the vic was being embalmed alive (YUCK!) and knew they were there. He had called to trigger the message for them.
Just then, Stella found a child’s slide viewer. When she looked at the images, they were of another victim, this time, an Asian man. He was bloody and had duct tape on his mouth. In the background of the photo, they find clues leading them to a music hall uptown.
They managed to trace the call to the first vic and found that the killer was with the second vic in the music hall. When Danny & Mac got there, they found the victim alive and contained within a huge kettle drum. He was still alive, but died in the ER. The killer had cut out his tongue.
A cell phone had been found with the victim with video of him being tortured. The CSIs figured out that each of the two vics had been witnesses to a crime and the killer got each of them to tell what they saw before he killed them.
Stella went back to check out the files from the unsolved woman’s murder from the year before. She found out that the second victim lived in the same building as the parolee vic at the time of the woman’s murder. Apparently, they had both witnessed it but had not come forward.
The second vic had something in his mouth too. Hawkes did all kinds of tests and determined that it was a concert ticket to see Nova Kent perform. They decide that she must be the next target.

They found her in the middle of a performance. There was a man in the audience holding a bouquet of black lilies just like the ones that had been delivered before. He saw Stella point to him and a chase ensued. Flack & Danny caught and cuffed him.

Nova told them that she had lied about the music box because she had been scared. She had given the music box to Marie (the year-old murder victim) the day she had died. She had been a classical pianist and friend of Nova. She had seen him murder Marie, but somehow, he had let her live. But he started sending her black lilies to tell her to be quiet. She had moved four times to try to lose him, but he kept finding her.
The flower guy claimed he didn’t know anything about any of it. Meanwhile, Stella was telling the landlord at the building that they had a suspect.
The flower guy’s van had the same license plate number and he matched the physical description of the killer for Marie. He said that he got a phone call telling him that Nova was talking to the police. Mac and Det. Flack decided that he had killed Marie, but not the recent ones.
They realized that the dead parolee had not locked his own door, so the deadbolt had to have been locked by the killer.

Back with the landlord, Stella plays a scale on the piano in his apartment and finds the “A” key is without a wire. She knows he’s the latest killer. She had to chase him to the cellar of the building and he told her that he had tried to tell everyone that there had been witnesses, but no one listened. He had gotten the witnesses to give up their info, then left it for the police to find so they could solve Marie’s murder. He said he had done it all for Marie.
He finally stepped out where she could get a good shot, and she shot him in the leg.
The Statue of Liberty had been to get their attention.
And then, at exactly 3:33 in Mac’s office, the phone rang and when he answered, the person hung up. Finally, the teaser ad makes a little more sense. CHECK OUT THE CLOCK! I guess we have to wait to find that part out… (Great foreshadowing!!)
So what did you think of this episode? It was a very intricate plot, but worth it in the end. Do you agree? Leave a comment to share your thoughts about the show.
