Real World DA Wants to combine CSI: and Cold Case

by Jason on May 28th, 2007

District Attorney Rod Pacheco wants to do one better than TV and combine CSI: and Cold Case. No, we’re not actually talking about the TV shows this time, but more the plotlines in real life.

But while the popular “CSI” shows portray experts using the latest forensics techniques to solve new cases, District Attorney Rod Pacheco said he wants to put the proposed two-person unit on long-unsolved “cold” cases.

What a great idea in my opinion. I think we’d all be astonished at the actual number of “cold” cases on the record books in police precincts across the nation. It seems for those cases that actually have DNA evidence where something could be picked up by a trained team of CSI’s it’s a no-brainer. I’m sure the challenge though in the real-world is budgets and expertise to do the job the way it needs to be done. According to the article though California as a whole has seen a tremendous success rate in a variety of cases where DNA evidence has been available to be followed up on by detectives.

The state’s DNA database has grown significantly since 2000, when California’s Cold Hit Program was first funded. Now, DNA profiles extracted from blood and saliva samples taken from people convicted of violent crimes has resulted in matches to unsolved cases, Pacheco said.

From 2003 to 2006, the program had more than 70 DNA matches in Riverside County, a release from Pacheco’s office said. There were 32 matches in 2006. Expectations are the hits will double to more than 70 this year.

And to borrow from another popular TV show, hopefully all of that will lead more people to say…”Book ‘em Dano!”
