Jason’s “What Schemes May Come” Episode Recap

by Jason on April 16th, 2007

Another good episode from the cast of the NY line-up. We begin with what appears to be a medieval flashback into the days of knights and horses and jousting. Next we find a stiff in a hotel room suite that cost a pretty penny for this guy. He’s found with an ice-pick jammed into his brain stem, killing him instantly. Much later in the episode there’s a beautiful girl laid out on a bed in a very similar fashion to how Marilyn Monroe was found after her suicide. (I think this girl looked more like Christina Aguilera than Marilyn Monroe though.)

What do these three, seemingly separate instances have in common? Aside from all being dead at this point, there were all also suffering from terminal illnesses and had agreed in a pact together to cheat death of robbing them of their life. They decided to rip the sickle from the reaper’s hand and take over the place and time of their entrance into eternity. There was only one problem, there were supposed to be four bodies. One of the girls couldn’t go through with it though and she was tormented by the fact that she had let her friends down. She was supposed to die like Juliet by poisoning.

As Lynn had stated, they were able to tie her to some of the murders by her DNA, which she wouldn’t willingly provide, but she provided anyway from a piece of artwork that was a picture of her actually DNA. Now, I realize that this is TV and not purely based in reality, but I’m curious as to if this could really be done? Anyone know?

Furthering the scientific questions of this episode, as they were investigating the death of another individual, the team finds a thread of evidence and take it back to the lab. Under the microscope, Mac sees that the strand of fabric turns out to be natural silk. The problem, is the spider that produced it would have had to be about a 150lbs. THAT’S A BIG SPIDER!

The cadaver this evidence came from had an interesting experience. First we see Mac running through the office and finally arriving at the loading dock where his girlfriend has been attacked and a body stolen from the coroner’s van. Later the body is found in the river, still in the coroner’s body bag. When they show up to examine the body again, it gasps for air. IT’S ALIVE, IT’S ALIVE!!!! (Sorry, broke out into Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein for a minute).

The piece of silk leads them to a lab where there’s a goat getting milked into a bowl and a machine is spinning silk out of the bowl of goat’s milk. Oddly enough, on Discovery Channel the end of last week there was another mention of them injecting spider DNA into a goat’s mammary glands for this to actually be viable. Bizarre!

The laboratory was working on a project for self-induced hibernation in humans. The victim had overdosed on one of the ingredients in their chemical and this caused his death, er hibernation prematurely. This is also why Mac’s girlfriend, the medical examiner, didn’t catch that he wasn’t dead, he’s just sleeping! Which of course really upset her that she could have made that type of mistake.

All the murders are solved and two questions remain.

If you were dying, would you form a pact with your friends or other people to take you death and plan it so you’d have control over the when, where and how of your demise? And, what do you think about all the cool science in this episode?
